Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013: First Monthly Winner Accounced

Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013

The first winner of the Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013 sponsored and organised by MC Vanguard, Mitchell Charlesworth's Corporate Finance division, has been unveiled. Bromborough based Big Heritage utilises the surrounding area's rich heritage and history to engage with modern day issues.

The organisation, who work with private sector companies such as accountancy practices, law firms and local authorities highlight how modern day problems and issues have been solved in the past and what lessons can be learned.  Recent projects include recreating a Viking boat experience for Merseytravel to engage youngsters with climate change and wind power.

The company, who currently focus on the Merseyside and Chester area, are planning to launch its model as a UK-wide franchise. Big Heritage founder Dean Paton told Insider it was hopeful of having its first franchise in place by the end of 2013:

"We're proud of our roots here in Merseyside but it would be wrong for us to go to somewhere like Essex and offer a wishy washy generic model" he said.

"We are already in talks to launch our first franchise in Oxfordshire and expect that to be operational by the back end of 2013. In theory, the model can be recreated right across the UK.  Everything we deal with today has already been addressed in the past such as boundary disputes, obesity, transport."

The company's approach has seen it named the first monthly winner in the 2013 Merseyside Innovation Awards. The awards celebrate companies with fewer than 50 staff which are taking an innovative approach to growth.

There is no age limit on how old an entrant company is and products could have been developed over several years but brought to market or started generating revenue within the recent past.

Big Heritage is 18 months old and was founded by 29-year-old Paton during the third year of his archaeology degree at the University of Chester. It employs four staff and will be adding a fifth during the summer.

2013 marks the 18th year of the Merseyside Innovation Awards (MIAs), which were founded by Brian McCann, Partner and Director of MC Vanguard Corporate Finance, and strive to find the finest innovations being produced by companies across Merseyside. Details of how to enter the awards together with further information can be found here.

Other sponsors of this year's awards include Plus8, Brabners Chaffe Street, C-Tech Innovation, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce,  NatWest, the North West Fund,  University of Liverpool and WP Thompson.
