Second Monthly Winner of Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013 Announced

Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013

CNC Robotics have been named as the second monthly winners of the Merseyside Innovation Awards 2013, sponsored and organised by MC Vanguard, Mitchell Charlesworth's Corporate Finance division in recognition of the company's use of innovative robotic technology.

Jason Barker, a former set designer who has worked on tours for stars Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé Knowles, established Aintree-based CNC Robotics in Liverpool in 2011 and has developed software which enables industrial robots to be used in a host of new ways and applications.

A former classical sculpture student, Barker turned his hand to theatre and TV set design through his former company, Scenic Workshops which he later sold to a construction company who were looking to move into new sectors.

Jason told Awards co-sponsor Insider: "I believe what we are doing is very new, so much so that the technology is in its infancy and at the embryonic stage.

"Robots have been doing work for years but what we were doing is applying the software to do one-off operations via computer programmes.

"The innovative part is actually changing what a robot can do and making it do something it was never designed to do in the first place. At the end of the day, it's a just a robot which does what you tell it."

CNC Robotics also played a part in last year's Olympic Games when they were commissioned by confectioners Cadbury to create 18-inch replicas of iconic London landmark such as The Shard and Big Ben as part of its kiosk in Hyde Park during the Olympics.

Barker said the company was unique in the UK, with its closest competitor as far away as Italy. Monthly MIA winners will be put forward to the grand final in July when the overall winner will receive £10,000 in cash and £4,000 worth of consultancy fees.

If successful, Mr Barker said he would use the money to recruit new full-time staff as he currently utilised freelancers and contractors.

2013 marks the 18th year of the Merseyside Innovation Awards (MIAs), which were founded by Brian McCann, Partner and Director of MC Vanguard Corporate Finance, which strive to find the finest innovations being produced by companies across Merseyside.
