Mitchell Charlesworth Warn About New VAT Scam Targeting Businesses

Mitchell Charlesworth's VAT Expert, Gemma Gower is warning businesses to be aware of a new VAT scam which could cost unwitting victims significant amounts of money:

In short, genuine businesses are receiving letters claiming to be from HMRC, telling them that under EU law they are required to register in A. N. Other EU country, and they are required to pay £800 for the privilege.

A few weeks later, a second letter, which also appears genuine, is sent reminding the recipient to pay the outstanding balance.

These letters look very legitimate and according to HMRC, scores of genuine businesses have given over bank details to the fraudsters.

If you do receive a letter similar to the one identified above and you are a Mitchell Charlesworth client, please contact your engagement partner as soon as possible. All businesses who receive this letter are also advised to write to HMRC detailing the letter you have received using the following email address: phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.
