Alphasonics, which is based on Knowsley Business Park, designs, makes and supplies bespoke ultrasonic cleaning equipment such as cylinder cleaners, blanket wash cleaners and industrial water recycling systems and has supplied more than 1,700 systems worldwide.

Clients include companies in the print, electronics and engineering industries among others, such as printing press company Manroland, packaging group Edale and Harper Graphics.

In April, Alphasonics UCS celebrated its 20th year in business and now has 17 staff and an annual turnover of about £1.7m.

The MIAs recognise and celebrate companies with fewer than 50 staff which are using innovation and pioneering methods to support their growth.

Alphasonics was named one of the 2013 monthly winners for its 'betasound' product.

Managing director David Jones said this was a new technology which enabled a surface structure to be cleaned evenly and on several levels.

He added: "This technology has a great market potential. We have a two-track thrust which is the vet and healthcare sectors and this is specifically for the cleaning of surgical instruments.

"It helps to prevent infection and boost mortality rates and is potentially a great aid to the local economy and for both the saving and creation of jobs.

"Over our 20 years in business, we have always tried to innovate by pushing boundaries in terms of what ultrasonics can do.

"We're lucky enough to have the staff and the capabilities that allow us to try new and exciting things with the ultimate aim of providing industry wide benefits."

Next month the overall 2013 winner of the MIAs will be announced, with judges set to decide the final shortlist within the next few days.

The overall champion will receive £10,000 in cash and £4,000 worth of legal, business, PR, accounting or design consultancy.

Other sponsors of this year's awards are: Plus8, Brabners, C-Tech Innovation, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, NatWest, the North West Fund, Kenyon Fraser, University of Liverpool and WP Thompson. Insider is acting as media partner with the BBC.
