Leanvation named 1st monthly MIA winner of 2015

A St Helens-based manufacturer whose surgical gloves are being used to save lives in the Ebola-affected areas of West Africa has been named the first Merseyside Innovation Awards monthly winner for 2015.

Leanvation MIA Jan 2015 Winner

Leanvation was established in 2013 with backing from the North West Fund for Venture Capital, which is managed by Enterprise Ventures.

The company has developed a range of 100 per cent non-latex surgical gloves which are up to three times softer than standard surgical gloves, giving the user more sensitivity and control during surgery and reducing the risk of needle-stick injuries in which a needle used by a medical professional accidentally punctures their own skin.

It also largely removes the threat of healthcare workers experiencing career-threatening allergic reactions to the gloves. Last year, the firm shipped more than 50,000 pairs of gloves to West Africa for those treating the Ebola epidemic.

Leanvation was founded by former healthcare executives Dr Jonathan Day, Tony Downes and Steve King.

"We are very proud to have our innovation recognised by MIA," said Day. "We believe the products we have created will transform healthcare, potentially on a global level.

"All over the world, surgical gloves are critical in protecting healthcare workers and patients from infection. Allergies previously associated with surgical gloves can also, in worst cases, prove fatal to patients, while posing a legitimate risk of ending medical careers."

Awards founder Brian McCann, partner and director of MC Vanguard Corporate Finance, said: "Merseyside Innovation Awards is a great place for innovative companies and individuals to showcase their ideas and along the way it offers them the opportunity to be guided by one of the wide range of the sponsors involved with the awards."

Entries are already open for the Merseyside Innovation Awards 2015. The overall winner receives £10,000 in cash, while the runners-up are given the opportunity to access specialist business support worth up to £2,000.
