Three pioneering Merseyside businesses will compete to take top prize at the 2017 Merseyside Innovation Award (MIA) ceremony on Tuesday 11th July, with Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram, to present the accolade.

Gas Tag, a pioneering gas safety-monitoring device, Marlan Maritime, a tidal monitoring system and vTime, a virtual reality social network, will all go head-to-head for a top prize of £10,000 cash and a further £2,000 worth of professional business support to help with the winner’s business growth.

Each finalist will present their innovation to a panel of prominent Merseyside business leaders, including M-Soft’s Matt McAlister, MSIF’s COO, Lisa Greenhalgh and BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips.

The final will take place at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool with Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram, joining the celebrations to present the overall winner with the award.

Gas Tag’s pioneering technology monitors gas maintenance work on commercial and residential properties in real time, which creates secure and transparent records that can be stored and accessed via the cloud.

Liverpool-based Marlan Maritime records weather conditions, tidal movements and vessel traffic in the city’s Queens Dock to create bespoke solutions for efficient offshore monitoring, which can be used by shipping businesses, engineers and scientists.

Innovative social media app, vTime, is the world’s first social platform in virtual reality, which allows users to socialise with friends, family and colleagues in multiple virtual locations, all in real time.

The three finalists were selected from a shortlist of five applicants derived from over 40 submissions received.

Brian McCann, Merseyside Innovation Awards founder and partner of Mitchell Charlesworth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, said: “The standard of applications this year was incredibly high and made selecting just three finalists a real challenge.

“From medical diagnostic devices to property crowd funding platforms, the submissions really demonstrated the diversity of innovation in our region.”

On the evening, MIA will also present the Prestige prize, which is dedicated to larger businesses with a turnover of between £1m and £25m.
