Three cheers for brewery

Date: October 25 2007

AN award-winning North West brewery is raising a glass or two to celebrate its 25th anniversary in the beer trade.

Oak Brewing Co Ltd, which trades as Phoenix Brewery, produces more than one million pints of real ale a year including famous names such as Wobbly Bob, Arizona and Pale Moonlight.

Tony Allen, managing director, started his career in the brewery industry when he joined Bass in Sheffield when he was 16.

The 55-year-old said: “This is a landmark year for Phoenix Brewery. We have seen many changes over the years from new technology to the ever changing tastes of drinkers and we have to constantly adapt to those changes.

“However, we are busier than ever and demand for our ales is on the increase, which is down to our attention to quality, customer service and simply brewing great beers!”

Oak Brewing Co Ltd was founded in 1982 on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port, Wirral. It relocated to The Phoenix Brewery in Heywood in 1991, which has previously been a brewery since the mid 1800s until it was closed before World War II.

In 1996 the company began trading as Phoenix Brewery, which today employs nine staff, distributes it real ale across the country and to France and Holland.

Over the years Phoenix Brewery was won many accolades for its beers and was the first brewery in the history of the International Brewing Awards to win two gold medals in one competition.

Richard Hoppins, a partner at Mitchell Charlesworth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors has acted for and advised Phoenix Brewery for more than 20 years.

He said: “Congratulations to Tony Allen and the entire Phoenix Brewery team for marking their 25th anniversary. We have worked with them for around 22 years and we are fully aware of their achievements which are based on their dedication to producing high quality beers, which has brought them barrel loads of accolades and well deserved success, which I am sure will continue long into the future.”
